Grown, fermented, and roasted by one family

Most specialty coffee passes through five sets of hands before it reaches yours. Ours passes through only ours. We grow it, ferment it, dry it, roast it, and pour it on a single hillside in Escondido. It is the one thing no imported coffee can say.

Who we are

The Sunset Grove is the work of Fabio Patiño and María Fernanda Angarita Patiño. We grew up in the mountains of Colombia, in families that measured their years in harvests. In 2020 we came to the hills of Escondido, California, to restore a twenty year old avocado orchard, and in 2021 we planted the coffee we grew up with beneath its canopy. Today we farm this land the way we were raised to: patiently, regeneratively, and by hand.

Coffee

Two acres of Geisha and Catuaí grow beneath our avocado canopy at 1,550 feet. We pick every cherry by hand at peak ripeness, ferment it in small tanks we watch closely, dry it slowly in the shade, and roast it right here on the farm. One harvest a year, one hillside, and a cup we believe can stand with the best in the world.

Avocado

Beneath and around our coffee grows the canopy that shades it: regeneratively farmed Hass avocados. The same living soil, the same hands, the same standard. Our avocados are the grove’s second harvest, and La Reserva members are offered them each spring.
